Design and Specification
When released, The Samsung Galaxy Grand was dubbed as THE big-screened Samsung phone for the mainstream market.
While most would argue that the Galaxy Mega pair have bigger screens, The Galaxy Grand stopped sharply at 5-inches of screen and conveniently offers an extra SIM slot.
This year, the Galaxy Grand improves on every bit that counts.
At 146.8 x 75.3 x 8.9mm and weighing in at 163g, The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is not exactly light.
But with the added upgrades, the phone weighs just one gram more than its predecessor.
Compared to last season's model, the Galaxy Grand 2 has a fresher design.
Taller and slender, it looks clearly superior, with the reduced bezels adding to it.
The 5 inch screen got a tiny bump bringing it to 5.25 inches.
Naturally, so did the resolution.
From 480 x 800 to 720 x 1280 pixels, the resulting pixel density is a much more pleasing 280ppi over 187ppi.
Under the hood, the Broadcom dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU has been replaced with a 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 made by Qualcomm running on a Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 chipset with 1.5GB of RAM and an Adreno 305 GPU.
The phone runs on Android OS, v4.3 Jelly bean out of the box.
Camera and Multimedia
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 sports an 8 MP camera on its back capable of snapping photos with maximum resolution of 3264x2448 pixels, just like its predecessor.
Along with a LED Flash of course.
The camera app has the standard modes you’d expect from an Android phone, like Panorama, Night, and Sports.
There’s also an interesting feature called Sound and shot.
Sound and shot, as you’d figure, captures a photo and records ambient sound.
It’s pretty useful when you’re taking pictures and you want to record the sounds that go with it.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 records 1080p videos at 30fps.
Touch focus is available before and during video recording and you can switch back to continuous autofocus.
You can also capture 6MP still images during recording.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 supports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and quad-band 3G.
Which gives you speeds of 21.1Mbps downlink and 5.76Mbps uplink.
The Galaxy Grand 2 uses Bluetooth 4.0 alongside Wi-Fi support which includes a/b/g/n with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz band compatibility.
The Samsung AllShare feature is integrated with the Samsung's default apps allows you wirelessly stream all sorts of multimedia content to your connected stereo or HDTV.
Samsung Link another proprietary service offered by Samsung, automatically syncs all the multimedia content on your device to Samsung servers so it's backed up and also available for instant watching/listening on your other Samsung devices.
Battery and Storage
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 Duos comes with a standard 2600 mAH Li-Ion battery with an endurance rating of 45 hours and also offers talk time of 17 hours and standby time of 370 hours on 3G.
Storage is limited to 8GB of internal memory and can be further expanded to 64GB using a micro-SD card
